Robert Rosco Conclan Gaines was born on August
24, 1883. He was forced out of the house at age eight by his
step-mother Martha Warner. He was reared from then by the Hortons of
Waynesburg, Kentucky and worked full-time on their farm from age eight. As
an adult, he worked as a carpenter and part-time farmer. He was a gun
enthusiast and traded them often. He married Marada Singleton on
October 23, 1902 (he claimed to be two years older than he was when
he married Marada to avoid needing permission). He was married at
the home of Nathan Singleton, as was his father and mother. He was a
kind, caring father and son (he even cared for the step-mother who ran him
off as a child. When she was in need of a place to live late in
life, he arranged for her new home. She lived there the last
several years of her life and he was the one who made the arrangements for
her burial.) He died on September 6, 1939 and is buried in
Waynesburg, Kentucky at the Pleasant Point Church Cemetery.
Marada Singleton was born on
April 21, 1884. She spent her days gardening, canning, sewing, and
serving as a neighborhood nurse. She died on June 30, 1966 at
the home of Florence Salyers in Winton Place, Ohio and is buried at the
Arlington Memorial Gardens.
Amanda Florence was born September 9,
1903 and died July 1, 1983. She married Lawrence Salyers in Casey County
Kentucky. They had three children. Their first baby died. The other
children were twins, Alfred and Ralph, born on her birthday in 1924.
Eve S was born on November
21, 1905 and died on October 4, 1969. She had two husbands, Bond Gastineau
and Robert Meyer. She had a daughter, Ruby, with her first husband.
Virgil was born July 16 1914
and died on February 19, 1976. He married Esther Jones. They had two sons.
Rolin 'Ronnie' was born on November
22, 1921 and died on July 28, 1968. He married Blanche and had one son,
Robbie.
Oliver was born on January
1, 1925, and died on September 20, 1969. He married Agnes Branham and had
two children, Linda and David.
Ethridge was born on December
29, 1929 and died on October 16, 1987. He married Dorothy Willis and had
three daughters, Pam, Debbie, Becky.
