John Muse Sr was born 1633.  He died between April and September of 1723 in Westmoreland County, Virginia.  His first wife and the mother of his children was unknown.  He later married Catherine Moss Talbot between 1698 and 1717.  On September,  18 1668 he was granted two fifty acre tracts  from Richard Wharton & Thoms Greene.  The land was on the north side of Rappa in a portion of old Rappahannock County which became part of Essex and Richmond Counties in 1692.

Thomas Muse Sr was born about 1665 and died before June 1732, both  in Westmoreland County, Virginia  He married Elizabeth Sturman Stewart-Murphy after 1708, daughter of John and Elizabeth Spence.

John Muse Jr was born the eldest son of Thomas probably before 1700 in Westmoreland County.  John married  Mary Sanford, daughter of Richard Sanford.  Mary Muse died after 1733 & perhaps before 1744.  John  later married EleanorHe died in October or November, 1770 also in Westmoreland County, Virginia.

Thomas Muse Jr was born by 1733 & died in 1755 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  He married Sarah Chattin, a widow.  Her maiden name is unknown.  After Thomas' death, his widow Sarah married Cornelius DeForest of Lancaster County Virginia and they moved to Fincastle County Virginia. On November 7, 1775, at court for Fincastle County, Cornelus DeForest was appointed to keep the road in repair to the courthouse. Fincastle County became Montgomery County in 1776. Wythe County was created f rom Montgomery in 1789.

Richard Muse was born in 1752 in Lancaster County, Virginia.  Richard married Margaret no later than about 1775, probably in Montgomery County Virginia.  Margaret probably died between 1825 and 1831. He died between December, 1839 and November, 1840 in Pulaski County, Kentucky. Richard was the son of Thomas Muse and Sarah Chattin.  Richard and his brother Thomas served in the Revolution. In Richard's 1839 pension application he stated that he "enlisted in Wythe County, in August 1775" & served under Captain William Herbert, James Neville & Lt.Col. Campbell; that he "marched against the Shawnee Indians" until 9 November of that year, and was "discharged after the making of the peace"; that he again volunteered under Col. Campbell, and "marched into Tazewell County Virginia to the Clinch River to guard the frontier", and enlisted again in 1779, under Capt James Nevill, Col. Lynch's regiment. He gave his age as "86 years".  On January 6, 1778 Richard was recommended "to his Excellency the Governor as the proper person for Ensign in Capt. Pearce's Company " He was appointed on April 7, 1778. Further confirmation that Richard and his brother Thomas were Patriots is in the court record of Montgomery County Virginia, May 8, 1782: "To Richard and Thomas Muse, 10/ each for provisions furnished when on duty in North Carolina to join G. (General) Green" at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse.  On February 17, 1783, 1260 acres in Montgomery County were surveyed for Richard Muse: 360 acres "on Cripple Creek" and 900 acres "On both sides of Cripple Creek Branch, New River". In 1789, the part of Montgomery where Richard and Thomas lived became Wythe County.  The last sale of land in Wythe County was dated October 28, 1805, when Richard & Margaret sold 1001 acres to Richard Walton. Although Richard stated in his pension application that he moved to Pulaski Co KY "in 1803", the evidence from court records indicates that he was still in Wythe County. He first appears on Pulaski County tax records in 1807 as owning farms on both Fishing and White Oak Creeks.

James Muse married Elizabeth "Betsy" Chesney on January 4, 1816.  He was born in Virginia about 1794 and she in South Carolina on May 13, 1794.   James bought land in Pulaski County in 1816. James and Elizabeth sold land in Pulaski County in 1839.   They later moved to Russell County, Kentucky.  Their children included Richard, John, Galen, McCager, Polly, and Clarinda.  He later married Mary Jane Buster in Casey, County Kentucky on April 23, 1858.  He was in the Adair County census in 1860.  It is assumed that he died between 1860 and 1870.

An alternative history...

John Muse was born October 13, 1633 in Souldrop, Bedfordshire, England, and died April 05, 1723 in Westmoreland, Virginia.  He married Ann, with whom he had six children: John, died May 12, 1719, Westmoreland, Virginia; Jane, born about 1660, died about April 1732, married Christopher Pritchett in 1696; Thomas Muse, born 1665, Westmoreland, Virginia, died May 1732, Westmoreland, Virginia; Mary, born 1677, died in 1723; Ann, born 1680, died 1723 married John Wilson;  Nicholoas, born 1685, Westmoreland, Virginia, died 1716, Westmoreland, Virginia.

Tradition holds that Edward Mewes and his third wife, Margery Aucocke, were the parents of John Muse Sr.  They married on April 18, 1631.  Their children included Alice Mewes, born March 11, 1632 and John Muse, born 1633. However, it is important to review the notes below before accepting this tradition.
West & Fauntleroy claimed that Thomas & Ann were also John's children but they didn't offer any proof.  There's one existing record that infers that John & Mary had 13 children.

William Templeman Muse, who was a grandson of John, later became County Clerk of Pasquotank Co NC.  He made an notation in Pasquotank records stating,
"JAMES MUSE of Westmoreland died 22 Jul 1784 the last of 13 sisters & brothers". (See "Old Albemarle NC, Pasquotank Preinct: Births, Marriages,
Deaths, Brand Marks, 1691-1833"  by Wynette Parks Haun (pub 1981)..

This JAMES MUSE is definitely the son of John Muse.  This bit of information strongly suggests that JOHN MUSE & his 2 wives had 13 children, of which only
the above 4 have been positively identified.  Your THOMAS Muse is very possibly one of those missing children.
In Vol I of "A Southern Legacy", David Chambers says :"He was PROBABLY the third child of John Muse & his first wife, Mary Sanford".

Over 50 years ago, the Misses Mary Hope West & Juliet Fauntleroy published "The Muse Family of the Northern Neck of VA", an abbreviated version of their
218-page original mss, which is in the DAR Library in Washington.  This appeared in 1945 in Vol 53, "Va Magazine of History & Biography", in 3 parts
(April, Jul & Oct).  These 3 articles still stand as a reliable, documented resource for MUSE researchers, available in almost any decent-sized
genealogical library.  (Also see Vol I of "A Southern Legacy: Descendants of John Muse of VA", compiled by Dr. Roger David Chambers, pub 1974), which
expands on West & Fauntleroy's research.)  The Misses W & F presented several possibilities as to John Muse SR's European ancestry, but made no
conclusions.

More recently, Robert T. Muse made 2 trips to England seeking evidence of John SR's parentage.  He was not successful.  Additionally, the late Stephen
Muse of San Antonio engaged a professional research group, "Lineages, Inc", of Utah, to try to identify John SR's origins.  "Lineages" did extensive
research into records in England, the Barbados,  & France.  In addition to the Bedfordshire MEWES, they found  MEWES/MEWCE/MUSE families in Essex,
Northamptonshire, Isle of Wight & Calais, France, who could possibly qualify as John SR's ancestral family, but were unable to establish that any of these
were John SR's parents or forebears.

In short, in over a half-century of research by many competent researchers, including professionals, nothing's been found to prove who John SR's parents
were, or even where he was born.  All we really know is that he claimed to be 82 years old in 1715,  that he evidently spoke English, & that he is possibly
the immigrant ancestor.

Nevertheless, tradition holds that Edward Mewes and his third wife, Margery Aucocke, were the parents of John Muse Sr.  They married on April 18, 1631.  Their children included Alice Mewes, born March 11, 1632 and John Muse, born 1633.
